Tom and Herb believe today's Directors must take a bigger role in understanding the Big Things their companies face, and how management will deal with them. The Big Things cover the gamut, i.e., any opportunity or problem with enough impact to make a difference in performance or viability. For this session they focus on the strategic dialogue and ethics. Sage Partners' Decision-Ready Board construct will be the platform they will use to explore issues and define the Board's role. October 2009 Sage Fall Gathering At our Fall Gathering at the Wequassett Inn on Cape Cod, MA, we welcomed two new partners, John Conway and Clyde Rettig. Our prinicpal intellectual capital contributions came from Roland van Kralingen and Clyde Rettig. Roland reviewed the major themes of his new book, Emotuning, and its consumer branding implications. The concept is based on his work and a year long research project into how consumer behavior is shifting from values-based decision-making to being triggered by emotional responses. The book has been published in Europe. We are introducing the concepts into the US market and anticipate publishing an English version later this year. The focus of Cylde's session was on the strategic importance of a growing shortage of rare earth metals (REMs). Given the widespread use of REMs, and the impact on the US economy of the lack of availability, we have launched an effort to identify strategic alternatives and responses. In addition John Conway, Rich Schneider and Larry Bennigson brought the issue of IT solutions to the health care challenges. We have launched a effort in this arena to bring IT solutions into relevant client environments. As always we mixed community-building activity into our time together. We closed with a day trip to Nantucket Island on one of those exceptionally beautiful autumn days.

May 2009 Sage 2009 Gatherings It is our commitment to continue to build Sage Partners into a community. As such we will host two gatherings this year. The Spring Gathering was held in Poole, UK, a town in Dorset on England's south coast. Poole, the second largest natural harbor on earth, is notable for its role by the Royal Lifeboat Institute which saved over three thousand lives as the Allies were driven into the sea during the Battle of Dunkirk, then provided numerous craft for the successful D-Day invasion, Operation Overlord. The focus of the meeting was around implementing Governance processes proposed at the Fall 2008 Monterrey Gathering and working on client initiatives, especially our evolving Culture Risk assessment process. We will convene again in October, returning to the Wequasett Inn on Cape Cod.

October 2008 Sage Partners’ annual “all hands” gathering was held this year on Monterey Bay, California. As our firm has continued to grow we focused on the themes of Celebrating—our successful venture development transactions; Connecting—it is a key element to the building of our global Sage community that we need to spend time together; Adjusting—ensuring that our core values remain relevant and intact; Moving Forward—outlining our principal initiatives for the coming year. Our key adjustments centered on bringing more structure to the Sage governance process. We agree that at our current scale we can operate as a Board of the entirety. But, we have also chartered two Committees, namely, Growth & Strategic Initiatives and Partnership. This gives each of us an active, ongoing role as the firm evolves. We also celebrated our Founding Director, John Gaulding and his wife, Rita, at our closing dinner at the Inn at Spanish Bay overlooking the spectacular Monterey coast. For a variety of reason, John has moved into Emeritus status with the firm. It is a core principle of Sage that our community is a “place to stand forever.” While John will continue to work with us on a more contained basis he also pioneers the essence of our community.
